Ceiling Fans — Good for Summer AND Winter

Most people associate ceiling fans with summer, or at least the warmer months of the year; they have a powerful cooling effect on their own, and they also help circulate the air from your AC throughout your home.

But what you may not know is that you can tap into that same power in every season, even winter! Here’s why a new ceiling fan installation could be just what your home needs to stay comfortable year-round:

How a Ceiling Fan Helps

Contrary to what you might think, ceiling fans don’t actually lower the temperature in a room. Instead, the fan, which is pushing the air around the room, also moves it across your skin, making you feel cooler. It’s a “trick” of sorts that can save you a lot of cash in summer; use your ceiling fans more often and set your thermostat a few degrees higher.

But how is any of that helpful in winter? It’s simple: You reverse the process by changing the direction of the blades. Most modern ceiling fans have a way to set the spin of the blades to go either clockwise or counterclockwise; winter is when you’ll want them to go clockwise (and at a very low speed, too).

Since warm air rises, the blades’ redirection will pull cool air up from the floor while simultaneously pushing the heat collecting around your ceiling back down into your space. It’s a simple tweak that helps redistribute heated air and eliminate cold pockets.

The Benefits of Using Your Fan Year-Round

Using a ceiling fan more often is fantastic for saving money on energy costs, to the point that a ceiling fan installation can often pay for itself. Fans are also excellent for improving air circulation, which is great for indoor air quality and general stuffiness. That’s particularly useful in both summer and winter, as you’re less likely to have doors and windows open to let fresh air in.
